Veterans SA profiled Yanun Project Services as part of their focus on Indigenous-owned businesses making a strong impact in the defence industry. The article explores how Yanun, founded in 2019 by Ngarrindjeri veteran David Mallett, is creating meaningful pathways for First Nations people in project management and controls.
With a background in the Australian Special Forces, David established Yanun to deliver high-quality project services while building a team that reflects the diversity and strength of Aboriginal communities. “I want to be the largest employer of Aboriginal people in project management and controls in Australia,” David shared in the feature—highlighting the company’s purpose beyond profit.
Yanun’s work spans major national projects, including BAE Systems Australia’s Hunter class frigate program, ASC’s Life of Type Extension program for Collins class submarines, and redevelopment work at the Woomera Range. The company’s growth has been supported by the Indigenous Procurement Policy (IPP), which plays a critical role in opening opportunities for Indigenous-owned businesses in government and defence sectors.
Through its First Nations Development Program, Yanun offers hands-on training and mentorship for Aboriginal trainees, helping build long-term careers in project delivery. Even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yanun has remained focused on expansion and inclusion.
David also played a key role in helping establish The Circle – First Nations Entrepreneur Hub, which continues to support and connect Indigenous entrepreneurs across South Australia.
