Supporting Yolŋu-Led Change: Yanun Partners with Yalu on the Children and Family Nest Project

Galiwin’ku, North-East Arnhem Land

Yanun is proud to be working alongside Yalu Aboriginal Corporation, a Yolŋu organisation based in Galiwin’ku, on the Yalu Children and Family Nest project (Yalu Djagamirr Marrngithinyaraw’mirr ga djaga manymak’mirr djamarrkuli’w).

This significant, community-led initiative will deliver vital infrastructure that supports family reunification and strengthens social and emotional wellbeing outcomes for Yolŋu children, families, and the wider community.

Yanun is providing project management and construction management services, bringing remote delivery expertise to a uniquely complex environment. With no road access to Galiwin’ku and all transport reliant on barge or air, the project must be carefully planned around the short construction window available outside of the wet season. These challenges highlight the importance of strong governance, robust planning, and genuine partnership with local organisations.

The project reached a major milestone with the official launch held on Country at the Galiwin’ku site, where attendees heard from emerging Yolŋu leaders Litisha Baker (Yalu Board Director), Jasmin Yunupingu (Yalu Deputy Chair), and Anahita Tonkin (Yalu CEO), alongside Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Indigenous Australians, who spoke about the long-term value this infrastructure will bring to the community.

This partnership reflects Yanun’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with First Nations organisations to deliver community-led infrastructure that is culturally grounded, impactful, and enduring.

We’re honoured to walk alongside Yalu Aboriginal Corporation in bringing this important project to life.
